Kabat-Zinn is a teacher of mindfulness meditation and the founder of the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

Mindfulness is not something that you have to “get” or acquire. It is already within you – a deep internal resource available and patiently waiting to be released and used in the service of learning, growing, and healing.

Over the past thirty years, mindfulness skills have been taught with great effect in behavioural medicine and mental health settings as well as in corporations, schools, law courts, legal practices, prisons, and government agencies.

There is a existing and growing body of research that speaks of its effectiveness in a wide variety of contexts. NICE (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) recommends it as a frontline treatment for relapsing depression.

I like Jon Kabat-Zinn’s definition of mindfulness:

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way;

On purpose,
in the present moment,
and non-judgmentally.”

The cultivation of mindfulness may produce positive outcomes and people (including myself) who have completed the mindfulness courses have experienced some of the following:

  • Positive response to stressful situations
  • Worrying less, less anxious and depressed
  • Being less critical of themselves and others
  • Self-Confidence
  • Better quality of sleep
  • Finding space in their lives where there was none
  • Recognising a feeling of overloadness, learning to pace themselves and say no
  • Appreciating the eating experiencing and noticing when they are full
  • Coping better with Pain
  • Focusing on one thing at a time, experiencing creativity
  • Mundane life experiences, such as walking, become much more enjoyable and precious
